Defense separates wealthy Build to Defend Loot players from everyone else. You can earn steadily, but without traps, turrets, and smart gate layers, raiders will hack through and empty your vault in minutes. This guide covers every major defensive system in the beta — including gate hacking, laser walls, and how to keep traps working when attackers expect them to fail.

Defensive goals

Your defense should accomplish three things:

1. Delay — Make reaching loot take long enough that the owner returns or timers expire.
2. Punish — Drain raider health, gear durability, and patience with traps and turret fire.
3. Deter — Look expensive enough to raid that opportunists choose another plot.

Perfection is unrealistic in PvP beta. Aim for bases that survive one full raid attempt without total loss — that is usually enough to protect offline earnings and discourage repeat attackers.

Gates and hacking

Gates are the front door every raider tests first. In Build to Defend Loot, gates can be hacked — this is intentional design, not a glitch. Treat outer gates as alarms, not vault doors.

Best practices:

• Use multiple gate layers with trap zones between them.
• Place cheap outer gates you can afford to replace often.
• Save stronger gate upgrades for inner vault access.
• Never store top-tier loot between outer gate and first trap line.

When you hear hacking audio or see gate UI alerts, fall back to inner repair positions instead of charging into your own trap lanes.

Trap types and placement

Traps vary by beta patch, but general placement rules hold:

• Corner traps catch players cutting shortcuts through your maze.
• Floor tiles before vault doors trigger on rush steals.
• Ceiling or wall traps cover lines of sight turrets miss.
• Decoy paths with extra traps funnel greedy raiders away from real loot.

Turrets and firing lanes

Turrets reward clear firing lanes and punish straight corridors aimed at your vault. Tips:

• Overlap fields of fire from two angles so raiders cannot hug one wall safely.
• Elevate turrets when the build system allows — harder to line-of-sight block.
• Protect turret power or ammo mechanics if the game uses consumables — read latest patch notes.
• Do not cluster all turrets in one room vulnerable to simultaneous disable effects.

Balance turret spend with repair budget. A maxed turret you cannot reload after one raid is wasted cash.

Laser walls and freeze mechanics

Laser walls are a defining beta mechanic: they can freeze traps and turrets, shutting down kill zones for a window. Both defenders and raiders use them.

Defensive counterplay:

• Stagger trap and turret zones so one laser wall cannot freeze everything.
• Place a secondary kill lane offset from the primary corridor.
• Hold repair tools to reactivate frozen devices after the effect ends.
• Bait raiders into firing laser walls early, then engage while their window closes.

Layered kill boxes

A kill box is a corridor where raiders are exposed to multiple systems at once. Build one by:

1. Forcing a turn into the box after the first hackable gate.
2. Triggering floor traps at the turn.
3. Exposing the pause zone to turret fire from an angle.
4. Requiring a second gate hack before vault access — buying time for freeze recovery.

Test your kill box by walking it yourself without triggering admin bypass. If you can sprint through untouched, so can raiders with better gear.

Defending while offline

You cannot aim turrets while offline, so offline defense is entirely layout and automation. Prioritize:

• Passive trap triggers that do not need manual activation.
• Inner vault depth — see offline earnings.
• Avoiding loot near outer walls where quick raids matter more than trap damage.

Log out only after verifying gates are closed and no construction gaps expose inner tiles.

Repair and economy

Defense is a recurring cost. After each raid:

• Repair gates before cosmetic walls.
• Re-arm traps before buying new loot.
• Log income for a session — if repairs exceed earnings, simplify layout or upgrade loot first.

Common defensive mistakes

• All defenses at the outer gate — One hack clears the only kill zone.
• Single laser counter — Opponents freeze and walk.

• No rebuild plan — Keep a cash reserve equal to at least two full repair cycles.

Synergy with rebirth

Permanent bonuses from rebirth may strengthen traps, turrets, or repair speed depending on patch design. Rebirth before investing in luxury outer fortifications if your long-term plan needs different stat priorities.
